THE ORIGINAL SINCE 1921
Our founder Christian Backer patented the modern day tubular heating element back in 1921. Almost 30 years later in Sösdala Sweden, Backer AB was founded to commercialize this technology for large scale production. Since that time, Backer has developed and produced components and solutions for electric heating markets around the world. Backer AB, in that little town in the south of Sweden, continues to this day as the Backer Group's global headquarters. With 60 companies and 10,000 employees around the world, the Backer Group is the premier solution provider in the heating element industry.
Many of Backer’s products trace their origins back to the technical innovations in Christian Backer's patents. Heating experts around the word still today refer to the so called “Backer element” as the industry standard.

Christian Backer
OVER 100 YEARS OF QUALITY
E.L. Wiegand received a U.S. patent for a flat iron electric heating element in 1915. In 1917 he started the E.L. Wiegand Corporation operating under the name Chromalox. Emerson Electric Company purchased Chromalox in 1968. In 1998 Emerson split Wiegand/Chromalox into two divisions, Appliance and Industrial. In 2001 the Industrial Division was sold and now operates as Chromalox, Inc, Chromalox/Wiegand Appliance was renamed Emerson Heating Products. In 2011 the Appliance Division was acquired by Backer Sweden and became Backer EHP Inc. Backer EHP Inc. acquired Springfield WIre in 2012 and began marketing under the name Backer Springfield. Since that time, Backer Springfield has grown to be one of the largest heating element manufacturers in the U.S., continuing over a century or quality heating elements. Backer EHP Inc. in Murfreesboro, TN remains the North American headquarters for the Backer Noth America Group.
